Costa Rica can be visited year-round; there are only slight temperature fluctuations. However, there are no seasons as we know them in Europe; instead, the year is divided into the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season begins in May and lasts through October; the rest of the year is the dry season.
During the European summer, Costa Rica experiences what is known as the “Green Season” . As the name suggests, the rainforest is in full bloom during this time. Although it’s called the rainy season, it doesn’t rain continuously—rather, it comes in the form of short but intense showers, usually in the afternoon.
For nature lovers and botany enthusiasts, the rainy season is therefore the best time to visit, as it’s when you can experience Costa Rica’s magnificent flora. The blooming orchids are particularly beautiful; there are approximately 1,500 different species in Costa Rica. If you’d like to watch turtles lay their eggs and later hatch, the best time to do so is between March and November in Tortuguero in the north. In late summer, you can spot whales from the Southern Hemisphere. There are plenty of opportunities for surfing in Costa Rica, with the Pacific coast being the most popular spot. Despite occasional rain showers, the summer months are best for a surfing vacation, as the waves are at their best during this time.
The dry season in Costa Rica doesn’t mean it never rains at all, but rather that rainfall is lower than during the rainy months. This is a very popular time to travel, as many visitors want to escape the European winter. You can enjoy fine sandy beaches and turquoise waters in Costa Rica all year round. The best time for swimming in Costa Rica is from December through April. This applies to both the Pacific Coast and the Caribbean. Costa Rica offers countless hiking opportunities through beautiful rainforests and misty mountain landscapes. Avid hikers should travel during the dry season to avoid wet and slippery trails. Additionally, July and August are also ideal for nature excursions, as rainfall is usually light during these months and the natural environment and wildlife are lush and full of life.
For animal lovers, Costa Rica is an absolute highlight. The famous quetzal—with its iridescent red and green plumage—is well known to many; the best chance to catch a glimpse of this national bird is between December and April. During the same period, with a little luck, you might also spot whales from the Northern Hemisphere.
Although certain months are better suited for specific activities, Costa Rica has an enormous amount to offer year-round and can be visited at any time. The water temperature ranges from 22 to 32°C all year round, and the flora and fauna are unique and breathtaking no matter the season. Whether you’re a hiker, an adventurer, or a surfer—Costa Rica offers everyone the opportunity for unique experiences.
