In Thailand, there are no four seasons as we know them from Europe, the year is rather divided into rainy and dry seasons. However, temperatures and precipitation can vary greatly depending on the region.
The dry season lasts from November to February, the temperatures are rather pleasant and there are few rainy days. From July to October is the rainy season. Although the amount of precipitation is significantly higher, it is mostly heavy but short rain showers in the afternoon. At this time, nature is in full bloom, the famous rice fields are shining in bright green.
Chiang Mai is one of the most famous and popular cities in northern Thailand. In this region, temperatures even rise to 40°C from March to May, which is why this time is often avoided. This is followed by the rainy season, which lasts until about October. Heavy rain showers are often a welcome cooling at around 30°C. Because of the amount of rainfall, many tourists avoid this time of year, which creates ideal conditions for a budget holiday.
It is pleasantly cool in northern Thailand during the European winter, at night the temperatures sometimes even drop to 14°C. At the same time, the humidity is significantly lower, as there is a dry season between November and February. This time of the year is particularly suitable for hikers.
Central Thailand includes the Asian metropolis Bangkok and beautiful islands such as Koh Chang. In this part of the country, it is very dry and warm from January to April. 34°C is to be expected, in large cities it will be even hotter during the day.
From May to October you have to expect heavy rain showers. Here, too, it does not rain continuously for days, but rather in the afternoon, in the form of short thunderstorms. As a result, the temperatures drop and also make the rainy season a pleasant travel time, which attracts with low prices and few tourists.
Phuket, Krabi and Koh Phi Phi are among the most popular destinations in Thailand and are particularly popular with nature lovers. Here in southwestern Thailand, too, the rainy season lasts from May to October and is characterized by more rainy days than the rest of the year. However, the temperatures are between 25 and 32°C all year round. Therefore, you can visit this part of the country at any time without knowing it.
In the months from July to April, very high temperatures prevail in the southeast, while heavy rain showers are to be expected from September to January. Therefore, European spring and autumn are the best time to travel. However, since prices are very high in spring and the sights and beaches are often overcrowded, it is highly recommended to plan your trip from the end of July.
In summary, Thailand has a lot to offer all year round. Although the dry season is more recommended for beach holidays and the rainy season for mountain trips, you can travel to Thailand all year round without having to worry too much about the weather. The temperature fluctuations are nowhere near as great as in Europe.
Thailand itself is an incredibly beautiful destination and is ideal as a first long-distance or solo destination. But even experienced travellers return to tropical and adventurous Thailand again and again. See for yourself!
